Thom Kuhn

Thomas “Thom” Kuhn (Jour’81) began his construction career the summer before entering CU. He started as a laborer on a paving crew. Since then, he’s done a few things, including serving as President and CEO of Millstone Weber, LLC (One of the largest infrastructure general contractors in Missouri) and its predecessor companies from 2001 through his retirement at the end of 2024. During a brief respite from the construction industry (1988 – 1993), Thom was a reporter and editor at Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis.

In November, he was the first recipient of the Thomas Nellums, Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award from the MOKAN Construction Contractors Assistance Center. MOKAN is the leading advocate for minority contractors and workforce inclusion in Eastern Missouri.

Along the way, Thom and 3 others started PHL, Inc. in 2005. PHL, Inc. – a 501(C)3 organization that has spent more than $5 million to improve inner-city athletic facilities and equipment in the St. Louis area. The work has cost the recipients nothing. Thom has served as PHL, Inc.’s President since its founding. He has served on several boards and committees through the years. Among them: the ESOP Board of Directors MBK Enterprises; Jewish Community Center of St. Louis Board of Directors + Executive Committee; Board of Directors PHL, Inc.; Chairman AGC of Missouri Diversity Committee; St. Louis Construction Prep Center Board of Directors; Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, Missouri Advisory Board; Missouri Transportation Coalition – SITE Improvement Association representative; and the Southwest Bank of St. Louis – City Region Advisory Board.

The annual scholarship for student community service for Missouri 81st JROTC Program at Lafayette High School is named for Thom and his partner, Dianne O’Connell. Thom and Dianne have six children and one grandchild and live in San Diego, CA.
