Staff Council coordinated folding of peace cranes at the Diversity and Inclusions Summit in November 2019. Summit participants were asked to take a few moments to engage with each other, write a message of hope on the origami paper, and then fold the message into a crane. The hope was to eventually create a mobile to display at the Spring 2020 summit. Due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, this could not happen.

Thanks to a , about 100 folded colorful cranes – many with messages inside – were delivered to the on Saturday, July 24 and added to the 7/20 Foundation’s .  The cranes were presented to Foundation CEO Heather Dearman by Staff Council member Betty Rasmussen. Heather was very excited to receive the donation. The 7/20 Memorial Foundation will send the cranes collected in the box to other communities in need of support.

Welcome to Fall semester!  This past year was like no other. As we look ahead to another academic year, we are preparing ourselves and working to drive the university forward.  We would like to reiterate our commitment to helping shape CU Boulder to be a better place for all staff everyday.

Before we can look too far ahead, we must first acknowledge the dedication and hard work that CU staff members display every single day.  From the moment the pandemic first hit, to the excitement of welcoming students back in full capacity this fall, staff at CU Boulder have been at the frontlines, looking out for the larger CU Boulder community and each other, and ensuring that our community roars back stronger than ever.  Staff are the backbone of our campus. We are especially thankful to all those who made the sacrifices necessary to keep campus up and running during the pandemic.

Some of us are beginning to come back to campus, some will remain remote, and some never left. Your Staff Council is here to ensure that all your voices are heard, that you feel supported, and that you are a valued member of our herd.  Some challenges are known and are being addressed, such as the details surrounding return to work and hybrid work schedules.  Other obstacles and challenges will no doubt present themselves as we go forward.  Together, we will face all challenges presented to us and become a stronger community because of it.

All Staff Council committees have rolled up their sleeves and gotten to work as we begin programming for the upcoming year.  Whether it be the recognition, equity, inclusion, or the future of work, the staff at CU Boulder can be assured that their staff council colleagues are committed to this work and will continue to advocate on behalf of all staff at CU.

We want to encourage all staff at CU Boulder to get involved and join the conversation.  With Staff Council, you have a voice.  We will listen, we will advocate, and we will make sure CU Boulder staff voices are heard when decisions are being made.  From the search of a new CU president to working with campus departments such as Parking Services, to sharing everyday concerns with university leadership, your CU Boulder Staff Council will be bold, will be strategic, and will never back down from a challenge.

Everything we do will be done through the lens of equity and inclusivity. Shoulder to shoulder we will press on.

Please feel free to contact Staff Council at any time. We continue to wish you and yours well.

In Solidarity,

Kelsey Draper, Jasimine Evans, Quiana (Ana) Martin

Staff Council hosts a monthly speaker series and this month it is featuring the Infrastructure & Sustainability Mentor Program (ISMP). Come join us on September 9 at Noon to learn all about this program.

The ISMP is a staff mentor program available to all staff at CU Boulder, provided one of the mentor teammates is an Infrastructure & Sustainability staff member.  Entering its 10th year, the (ISMP) is designed to provide our staff opportunities for professional and personal development. Mentor partner teams serve as role models to each other, providing support in identifying and pursuing career goals, and enhancing skills to prepare employees for future success in their careers with our department and the University of Colorado Boulder.

This is a no cost employee development opportunity for staff.  This year, in addition to the mentor partnerships, participants will have the opportunity to learn and participate in programming that includes Social Justice and Change, Change Management, Sustainability, and The Power of Gratitude.  Additionally, ISMP hosts a leadership roundtable discussion and holds its annual ISMP Gives initiative - an opportunity for participants in the mentor program to give back to their community.

This year, participants who successfully complete the program will earn a micro-credential from the university.

Applications are due September 10th. For more information, visit the mentor program website.

Are you or your child interested in participating in a research study on mood and behavior?

The Research on Affective Disorders and Development Lab has two upcoming research studies:

  1. Research on the effects of CBD on mood and behavior among young adults ages 18 to 30.
  2. Research on cognitive abilities, brain networks, and emotional wellbeing among adolescents ages 13-16.

The CBDx study includes a few different parts:

  • You will answer short twice-daily surveys for 6 weeks on your mobile device.

The study takes place over the course of 6 weeks and you will be compensated for your participation (up to $1,038 for completing all parts of the study).

Participants can earn up to $1,335 for their time and effort completing all parts of the study.
