On Tuesday April 9, 2024, RASEI hosted a screening of The Oil Machine Documentary as part of the campus-wide 2024 Conference for World Affairs.

How can we break our addiction to oil? So much of modern society is built on, and with, oil. As we make the necessary transition to clean and renewable energy sources, so much is going to have to change. This documentary uses the UK’s North Sea oil economy as a discussion piece to explore a number of the different perspectives involved, everything from large oil companies, oil workers, to climate scientists and activists. The film provides a voice to a broad range of different perspectives and tensions involved in this transition and discuss some of the complexities on how we are going to make this change.

The screening, which attracted more than 50 people, was followed by a panel discussion with RASEI Fellows Kat Knauer and Jeff Logan, and executive producer Jame Marriot. The ideas and topics presented in the film prompted some interesting group discussions around the urgency of the transition and drew comparisons to the original effort that was put forth to access oil.

RASEI Engagement at the United Nations Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit

The United Nations Human Rights Committee and CU Boulder Co-hosted the 2022 Right Here, Right Now Global Climate Summit. The aim of this conference was to bring light to the interconnectedness of human rights and climate change. By gathering some of the world's foremost human rights, scientific, political, educational, cultural, and industrial leaders, the conference addressed these issues and tasked the participants with establishing specific action items that will provide approaches to combat the harmful effects of climate change on human rights.

Modeling has shown that if the world stops burning fossil fuels, we can avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Transitioning our energy system from fossil fuels to non-carbon energy sources provides a host of benefits beyond addressing climate change.

Reductions in air pollution, improved social equity, increasing the number of good-paying jobs and boosting the economy are all possible. This report, co-authored by RASEI Fellows Jeff Logan and Chuck Kutscher, explores what this transition looks like, the benefits and opportunities of making this change, and mechanisms that can be used to accelerate this global transformation.

The executive summary, 15 pages long, provides a great introduction to the challenges, solutions, and opportunities to this complex and crucial problem.
