The Mathematics Department will host the 56th  featuring Professor Laura DeMarco from Harvard University in February 2025.

The lecture series consists of a general audience talk on Monday Feb 17th 3.30-4.30pm titled From the solar system to the Mandelbrot set and a Mathematics colloquium talk on Tuesday Feb 18th 3.30-4.30pm titled The geometry (and algebra) of the Mandelbrot set. All of the events will take place in the auditorium located in Kittredge Central Hall.

All faculty, staff, graduate students and undergraduate students are welcome to this event!

The Math Department welcomes our new PostDocs in Fall 2024:

Charlotte Aten received her PhD from the University of Rochester in 2022 under the direction of Jonathan Pakianathan. Her research interests lie at the intersection of universal algebra, combinatorics, and category theory. She enjoys exploring connections with algebraic topology, computer science, and logic. Spencer Daugherty completed their PhD at North Carolina State University in 2024, advised by Laura Colmenarejo (NCSU) and Sarah Mason (WFU). Their research interests are enumerative and algebraic combinatorics, in particular, combinatorial Hopf algebras, quasisymmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions, the Tamari lattice, parking functions, and chromatic symmetric functions.
 Juan Villarreal received his PhD in 2018 at the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, under the direction of Reimundo Heluani. His research interests include Lie groups, Lie algebras and their geometry with a focus on the study of infinite dimensional algebras and vertex algebras.

Siddhant Agrawal joins the Math Department /math/2024/08/20/siddhant-agrawal-joins-math-department Siddhant Agrawal joins the Math Department Anonymous (not verified) Tue, 08/20/2024 - 16:01 Categories: news The department is pleased to welcome Dr. Siddhant Agrawal as the new Assistant Professor at the Department of Mathematics.  Dr. Agrawal received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 2018.  He had a three-year appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.  Dr. Agrawal then spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the Instituto de Ciencias Matemáticas, Madrid, Spain. Dr. Agrawal's work is in the analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations, in particular in water waves and the Euler equation.  He is interested in questions of existence, uniqueness, singularity formation, and the effect of boundaries. With regard to his newest appointment, Dr. Agrawal says: "I am really excited to join CU Boulder as a faculty member and I am looking forward to getting to know everyone in the department."

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Impact grant from the office of the Vice Chancellor for DEI at CU Boulder together with funds from the National Science Foundation and the Mathematics department will support the programming of Math For All in Boulder for the 2024/2025 academic year.

 The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Impact grant from the office of the Vice Chancellor for DEI at CU Boulder together with funds from the National Science Foundation and the Mathematics department will support the programming of Math For All in Boulder for the 2024/2025 academic year.The organizing team consisting of Dr. Fuster Aguilera, Assistant Professor Orosz Hunziker and Associate Professor Czubak first obtained the DEI Impact grant in 2023.Past Math For All in Boulder activities included , several poster workshops for undergraduates in the Front Range Area and the  which took place in April 2024 with 68 participants in the CU Boulder campus. The 2024 edition of the Math For All in Boulder conference, an event designed to “provide a friendly and open environment to learn and discuss mathematics”, consisted of 14 undergraduate poster presentations, 6 graduate student research talks and two plenary talks together with networking and community building activities

For the coming year, the Math For All programming will include a second edition of Mates para Todes on Oct 25 2024, a colloquium talk in the Math Department with Professor Pamela Harris on September 12 2024 and the 2025 edition of Math For All in Boulder conference in the Spring 2025.

Deeley specializes in index theory and dynamical systems, and came to our department in 2017 as an assistant professor. He also won a three-year National Foundation Science Fellowship entitled: “C*-algebras associated to minimal and hyperbolic dynamical systems" starting August 2023. This supports Dr. Deeley's research on invariants used to study and classify highly abstract objects. The key properties of a useful invariant are that it is computable and distinguishes many different objects. For dynamical systems, an important class of mathematical objects, the construction of invariants can be very involved. Dr. Deeley will use this NSF funding to study invariants of dynamical systems defined via abstract operator algebras and K-theory. The project will also involve significant contributions from early-career researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students, who will benefit from training through research involvement.

(MEET) is a collection of video interviews with mathematicians from various career stages and diverse backgrounds. MEET goal is to create a consistent collection of video profiles of mathematicians from underrepresented groups and for students to access stories of modern day mathematicians from underrepresented groups.

These interviews highlight the accomplishments and struggles of mathematicians as well as their field of work and their story of becoming a mathematician. In the interviews, each mathematician provides a brief description of their work in an accessible way and more than 30 fields of mathematics (from number theory to machine learning) are highlighted in the MEET collection. This project was created in 2020 by Drs. Padi Fuster Aguilera and Selvi Kara.

Dr. Padi Fuster Aguilera has been awarded a National Science Foundation Mathematical and Physical Sciences Ascending Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (NSF MPS-Ascend) to conduct a program of research, education, and activities related to broadening participation by groups underrepresented in STEM. This fellowship supports the research project entitled "Fluid Equations and Chemotaxis on Manifolds". The project activities will be conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder under the mentorship of Dr. Magdalena Czubak.

This project includes research on two related topics in partial differential equations (PDE) and differential geometry. The first one is the search for an intrinsic viscosity operator on a general Riemannian manifold which is of great importance for understanding the appropriate formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations on curved manifolds. The second one is the study of the qualitative behavior of solutions for a PDE model for chemotaxis in curved manifolds with an application to tumor growth in organs. The broadening participation activities for this project include and the . Meet a Mathematician is a collection of video interviews of mathematicians from diverse backgrounds where their personal stories as well as the math research that they do is highlighted with the aim of providing role models for students. Math For All is a nationwide mathematical conference featuring speakers from diverse backgrounds with the main goal of creating a friendly and welcoming environment to discuss mathematics.
