Rayna Benzeev, an ENVS PhD candidate, has recently been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (SPRF). She will be working alongside Dr. Meg Mills-Novoa at University of California Berkeley through her postdoc fellowship. Her project will integrate geospatial mapping and statistical sciences with political ecology and the social sciences to study the spatial distribution and drivers of short-term versus long-term forest restoration in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. To examine the long-term outcomes of forest restoration efforts across biome, community, and property scales, Rayna will determine the exact spatial locations of forest restoration that are most important to understand for decision-making and the political-economic and social drivers of forest restoration in these locations. Congratulations on your award!

ENVS Associate Professor, Peter Newton, and ENVS Associate Research Professor, Colleen Scanlan Lyons, were recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation's program on Recovery, Renewal, and Resilience in a Post-Pandemic World. Together with researchers from the UK and Brazil, this trans-Atlantic partnership will study the various ways in which forest-dependent people in the Brazilian Amazon may be able to engage as citizens and exercise their rights to influence institutions and political processes in ways that increase their own resilience and reduce their vulnerability to COVID-19 and to other threats (e.g., future epidemics, or river flooding). The research project will begin in May 2022 and will run for three years.

CU Undergrad Awarded Public Health Research Award /envs/2021/10/06/cu-undergrad-awarded-public-health-research-award CU Undergrad Awarded Public Health Research Award Anonymous (not verified) Wed, 10/06/2021 - 13:14 Categories: Faculty News Student News Tags: Faculty awards

CU Boulder undergrad Sravya Dhanwada has been awarded the Student Leaders in Public Health Award from the Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center. The goal of the Student Leaders in Public Health program is to enhance the public health workforce in the Rocky Mountain region, specifically in rural and underserved communities and populations, by supporting students conducting applied health projects and providing opportunities for mentoring and professional development.

Sravya is studying biochemistry and public health. The project that gained her the accolade is focused on better understanding the role of Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) on health outcomes among unhoused individuals in the Denver metro area, focusing on groups overrepresented based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation. GBI can shorten the path to stable housing, reduce income volatility, provide more opportunities for stable employment and improve the health of individuals experiencing homelessness. Sravya will be investigating how GBI impacts the health of individuals experiencing homelessness in Denver through the Denver Basic Income Project.

To complete the project, Sravya will be working with Marissa Westbrook at the Center for Housing and Homelessness Research (CHHR) at the University of Denver, and Dr. Jill Litt, a professor in the Environmental Studies Program at the University of Colorado Boulder.
