ENGL 3856-001: Topics in Genre Studies - Trashy Books (Spring 2020)
Why do people find trashy books so delicious?ÌýÌýThis course will take up one of the most popular kinds of trashy books – the romance – and investigate how and why it emerged.ÌýÌýWe will explore what romances are aboutÌýÌý-- lovers, quests, overcoming obstacles, lost children returned to their parents, fantastical beings, and magical objects – and what they do for their readers – satisfy fantasies, act as propaganda, and conceal reality.ÌýÌýOur readings will include Arthurian romances, such as theÌýLaisÌýof Marie de France and Chrétien de Troyes'ÌýArthurian Romances; Shakespearean romances, such as theÌýWinter's Tale; and meta-romances (books about romances), such as Walpole'sÌýCastle of Otranto, and Flaubert'sÌýMadame Bovary.ÌýÌýWe will also read some actual trashy, supermarket romances and watch some movies, such as theÌýFisher KingandÌýMonty Python and the Holy Grail.Ìý
